Join a team of designers and engineers who design custom chassis.  Chassis Engineering at Ferrara is responsible for designing, packaging and optimizing various component of the vehicle including: frames, suspension, engines, transmissions cooling packages, brakes systems, fuel systems, bumpers and associated bumper designs. Through our development process we design custom solutions to meet specific customer needs in a fast pace working environment.



As a Chassis Engineer you will be responsible for developing world-class, robust engineering solutions to the Fire Apparatus industry, including the design and development of systems installed on Fire Trucks that save lives all around the world. The Engineer is responsible for all stages of a product development; from R&D, through design and manufacturing, to test & evaluation, and aftermarket technical support. Chassis Engineers at Ferrara will become subject matter expert and will be relied upon by other employees and customers for technical guidance and support.



  • Participate in customer specification reviews and product planning meetings. Initiating innovative solutions that meet all customer, regulatory and company requirements. Conduct research and analysis of customer design proposals, specifications, manuals, and other data to evaluate the feasibility, cost, and maintenance requirements of designs or applications.
  • Responsible for the final design requirements and system interface management and release of engineering packages to production. Must initiate and lead detailed design reviews with cross-functional disciplines.
  • Develop plans for ensuring compliance to regulatory standards, adopted engineering standards and good engineering practices. Review and critique proposed changes to engineering standards, policies or details. 
  • Design for manufacturing (DFM) to produce optimal total package cost that meets specified product price point.
  • Verification of designs through calculations & other analytical techniques and tools. Assist designers in developing the structural design of products, using drafting tools or computer-assisted design/drafting equipment and software
  • Define test requirements and interpret test results to validate designs.
  • Create and manage indented BOM in adherence to company standards. Create and fully use engineering configuration tools for BOM and design automation.
  • Lead and execute cost saving projects through VA/VE initiatives.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes with emphasis on metal fabrication and assemblies.
  • Knowledge and use of lean principles as they apply to manufacturing and business processes.

Execute engineering changes through established processes and documentation.

  • Influence & lead others without direct supervision / authority.
  • Must become “Subject Matter Expert” of applicable regulatory standards – NFPA, DOT, FMVSS, ULC etc.
  • Ability to mentor team members on design principles, regulatory standards etc.
  • Senior level positions may require leadership and/or supervision of a small group or department of other engineers or designers.
  • Perform or assist with any operations, as required or directed, to maintain work flow or respond to production or customer requirements.


  • Bachelor Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering.
  • Advanced knowledge and practical use of drawing and drafting standards.
  • Proficiency in CAD systems - Autodesk Inventor and or AutoCAD.
  • Knowledge of NFPA/FMVSS standards related to Fire Apparatus is beneficial.
